Maha Kumbh Mela is one of the biggest and famous religious festivals of India, it is a spiritual journey which happens once in every 12 years and serves to unite millions of people on one platform. This fair is a form of Indian culture and tradition which is presented to the people of the whole world.
Importance of Maha Kumbh
Maha Kumbh is mentioned in ancient religious scriptures. It is related to the story of Samudra Manthan, in which gods and demons churned the ocean to obtain Amrit Kalash. It is said that during the churning of Amrit Kalash, the Lord God and the demons ran away, but drops of Amrit fell at four places. This place is:
- Haridwar (Ganga nadi)
- Prayagraj (Sangam – Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati)
- Ujjain (Shipra nadi)
- Nasik (Godavari nadi)
Types of Kumbh
- Maha Kumbh Mela: Happens every 12 years in Prayagraj
- Ardh Kumbh Mela: It happens every 6 years in Prayagraj and Haridwar.
- Purna Kumbh Mela: It happens in Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik and Prayagraj at an interval of 12 years.
- Magh Mela: Held every year at the Sangam in Prayagraj, it is also called Chhota Kumbh.
